Installation Basics for SHNIER Woven Carpet

INSTALLER NOTE: Use Constitutes Acceptance Except for any differences as noted herein, all Shnier woven broadloom carpet is to be installed in accordance with the minimum standards set forth in CRI 105 Standard Industry Reference Guide for Installation of Residential Textile Floor Covering Materials available from the Carpet and Rug Institute cri.org

Installation contractors who do not have a practical working knowledge of pattern carpet installation including pattern matching, straightening pattern lines and the techniques of stretching and stay nailing should not attempt installing.

For bid purposes, pattern carpet installation will require more time, skill and cost than non-patterned styles. This should be recognized when estimating the job.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INSTALLERS!
1. Improper installation can void product warranties. Confirm DYE LOT using LOT REFERENCE NUMBER found on the roll. Inspect roll for flaws. Claims not honoured on installed material that has visible flaws.
2. Approved Seam Tape for Direct Glue - Orcon K-40S, CT-3, Super 3S (and wide), Roberts #50 - 330,350,500 (wide 360 & 365) Approved Seam Tape for Double Glue - Orcon CT-7 or Roberts 50-325.
3. Approved Direct Glue Adhesive for both double glue and direct glue - Tandus B-19 Greenbond adhesive or Roberts 3300 ~
4. Approved Underpad for Stretch in Over Pad - Eco-Cushion Plus, Firmflex, Director
5. Approved Underpad for Double Glue installation, Firmflex

Before starting the installation, be sure of the following:
- The material is the correct style and colour.
- Check for dye lots and roll sequence information supplied by the manufacturer and follow instructions.
- Look for pile-lay (nap) indicators and always run the pile-lay (nap) in the same direction. In addition to the back print, Shnier woven styles have a coloured marker yarn woven into one side of the backing about 4 inches from one edge.
- Do Not Fold Shnier woven carpet rolls. This can result in wrinkles in the face that are difficult to remove.
- Cuts on the face are a serious issue with woven loop styles. Never trim directly on the face. Use a loop pile cutter for edge trim.
- Adhesive must cure for at least 72 hours before placing plastic sheeting on top because plastic yellowing of the carpet can occur.

INSTALLATION METHODS
Stretch in Over Pad is the recommended method of installation for Shnier woven broadloom products. The carpet can also be installed using double glue and direct glue methods. Bubbles in the installation are not covered by manufacturer warranty.

PLANNING AND LAYOUT
Planning prevents the unexpected.
A comprehensive seaming diagram should be prepared and approved by the purchaser before beginning the installation.
- Seam placement should run parallel with the main flow of traffic.
- Whenever possible, run the carpet lengthwise down corridors.
- Follow the manufacturers suggested Laying Sequence.
- Pre-plan where dye lot changes, if applicable, will fall.
- Always dry lay ahead, watching for irregularities in the pattern.

FLOOR PREPARATION
Refer to CRI 105 for a full description of proper site conditions and floor preparation. Where a concrete slab is involved: Moisture emissions must not exceed 51b/1000sf/24hr with a Portland cement based patching compound.
Slab pH must not exceed 9.0. Fill cracks and depressions with a Portland cement based patching compound. Skim coat porous or dusty floors with Portland cement patching compound or paint with a primer to help slow absorption of the adhesive.

SEAM TRIMMING
1. Shnier woven carpet can be cut in both length and width without cutting through the surface loops. Before cutting, fold the carpet back to expose the row of backing to see where a cut can be made.
2. For 100% loop and tip sheared loop constructions, cut lengthwise between the rows from the face using a loop pile cutter.
3. For alternating loop and cut, cut in the center of the cut pile row where a clear row of backing is exposed.
4. Some high loop constructions will be difficult to open the length row on the face. For these styles the alternate method is to follow the backing row from the back with a straight knife. Follow the row precisely; avoid cutting the back loops of pile yarn and use shallow penetration of the knife to avoid cutting face loops.
5. For width (end) cuts where pattern match is required, follow the weft line from the face using a loop pile cutter.

SEAM REQUIREMENTS
1. Heatbond seam tape is required for all Shnier woven broadloom styles for both stretch in over pad installation and double glue installation.
2. Where heat bond seam tape is used in stretch in and double glue installation, apply white latex seam sealer and let it dry before making the hot melt seam.
3. For direct glue installation, a commercial grade seam sealer is required at all seams.

MANUFACTURING TOLERANCES
Carpet is a textile product subject to a certain amount of distortion during and after manufacture. While extensive measures are taken by Shnier to assure pattern accuracy, perfect pattern match and perfectly straight lines are not guaranteed. Shnier manufactures broadloom carpet to tolerances considered workable to achieve satisfactorypattern match and straightness. If the following tolerances are exceeded, stop installation and call your Shnier representative.
Tolerances: Bow 3/4" or less across width. Skew 1" or less across width. Pattern elongation I" or less in 12 feet length of carpet.

ACHIEVING PATTERN MATCH
1. Before cutting, check the pattern repeats by counting the number of patterns in an exact length of 10 ft. and compare the results from roll to roll. Patterns are to be laid starting with the longest pattern and working to the shortest.
2. Dry lay as much of the carpet as possible before starting the install.

GENERAL RULES OF PATTERN MATCHING:
Start in the center of the drop and stretch toward both ends. An exception would be to concentrate efforts on major walkways and less emphasis for under furniture seams. Step back frequently and sight down diagonal pattern lines as well as straight across.
Do not mix dye lots unless approved in writing by Shnier. Start with the longest pattern (the least number of patterns in 10 it). It is easier to stretch patterns than to shrink them. Where necessary to shrink the pattern using double glue and direct glue installation, allow fullness and press down as the glue sets up.

Installation

STRETCH IN OVER PAD INSTALLATION METHOD
Prepare the floor as required for a quality installation.
Install architectural smooth edge or a double row of standard smooth edge on all sides of the room.
Install the recommended underpad. In cases where an alternate underpad is required, underpad thickness is not to exceed 3/8" (9.5mm)
Dry lay the carpet in the predetermined layout, checking for visible flaws and pattern match.
Trim the edges and apply the white latex seam sealer to both edges of the carpet.
Insert the hot melt seam tape under the carpet. Prestretch and stay nail the carpet as required to get an exact pattern match along the seam. Hot melt the seam.
Stretch the carpet onto the smooth edge. A full pole power stretcher is highly recommended. Shnier woven carpet can be stretched up to 1" in 12 it in the length but has very little stretch in the width. A power stretcher will stretch it tight on the pins and will assist greatly in pattern matching and straightening.

DOUBLE GLUE INSTALLATION METHOD
Prepare the floor as required for a quality installation.
Dry lay the underpad being careful to avoid all excess seams in the traffic paths and ensuring the pad seams and carpet seams are not in the same location. Adhere the underpad using a recommended adhesive and a minimum 1/16" x 1/16" x 1/16" square notch trowel. Ensure there are no gaps at the pad seams.
Dry lay the carpet on top of the pad checking for pattern match and ensuring no visible flaws. Trim the edges and apply the white latex seam sealer to both edges of the carpet.
Fold back one edge, mark the seam location, fold back the other edge. Spread the approved adhesive using a minimum 1/8" x 3/16" x 1/8" "u" notch trowel. Do not spread adhesive where the seam tape will go.
Drop the carpet into the wet adhesive. Place the hot melt tape under the seam.
As required, move the carpet for best pattern match and straightness. Use stay nails or other holding methods as required to hold the pattern in position until the adhesive cures.
Hot melt the seam, ensuring the seam is tight and flat.
Roll the carpet with a 35-50 lb roller to ensure full adhesive transfer to the back of the carpet.

DIRECT GLUE INSTALLATION METHOD
Prepare the floor as required for a quality installation.
Dry lay the carpet in the predetermined layout, checking for visible flaws and pattern match.
Trim the edges in preparation for seaming. Spread adhesive (as mentioned under "Important Information for Installers" above. For pattern carpet it will be necessary to drop the carpet into the wet adhesive, as the pattern may need to be worked into place before the adhesive sets. With the first drop in the adhesive, apply a 1/8" bead of seam sealer to the carpet edge. Fold the 2nd drop into the adhesive.
Move the drops as required to achieve pattern match, straight pattern lines and tightly closed seams. Use stay nails or other holding methods as required to hold the carpet in place while the adhesive sets. Roll the carpet to ensure 100% contact and adhesive transfer.
For Shnier woven backing do not exceed 75lb roller weight.
Refer to CRI 105 for any additional details.

TERMINATING THE EDGE
As referenced in CRI-105, all carpet terminations or transitions to other type flooring must have a capped with edge moulding or protective covering to protect the carpet edge. Edge ravel resulting from failure to protect the edge is not covered by the manufacturer warranty.
Damaged carpet at termination points is not a material defect.
